The twists and turns of Newfoundland

I rolled out of my hotel in Saint Anthony to find a stiff, cold wind.  There was more snow up here.

Off in the distance, there was one, massive iceberg.

Running aground in the stiff wind, there was another…

But, these were just the tip of the iceberg compared to what was to come (sorry for the pun).

Before heading to L’Anse aux Meadows I had an hour to spare at the local wharf.  The usual mix of shorthorn sculpins and Greenland cod came to play.

As I drove further north to Meadows, I couldn’t help but pull over as iceberg after iceberg caught my eye.  The strong wind had been pushing some of them well into the sheltered bays of this side of the peninsula.

This small town even had shards of icebergs lining the beach!

Eventually, I found this particularly striking one way off in the distance.

I noticed the shoreline wrapped around the bay, ending up quite close to the target iceberg.  Off I went!

Getting closer…

I stopped to snack on one of the iceberg shards.  Just needed a bit of Reese’s spread and it would have been perfect.  Unfortunately, that jar was long emptied by this point.

Made it!

I was pretty much floored at this point.  I hadn’t expected to see icebergs let alone chill out with them all morning long!

I stopped to fish a wharf in one of the bays, but found only the usual culprits.  Shorthorn sculpin.

On-route to L’Anse aux Meadows.

According to Wikipedia, Meadows is the most famous site of Norse settlement in North America.  Compared to what I had just experienced, I found it a bit underwhelming, but I’m not much of a history buff.  They had some reconstructed buildings to explore.

I didn’t have much time left either, as I had a two hour drive to Saint Barbe ahead of me to catch my ferry.  This stream must’ve been teaming with brook trout…

Another thing I noticed was that Newfoundland had some black sand beaches that would make Hawaii jealous… and dotted with iceberg shards to boot!  What a place!!!

Before driving into the ferry I had some time to spare to fish around the terminal.  What did I catch?  Shorthorn sculpin of course…  all aboard!

This was about the point when one bumble lead to another and my trip took a turn for the haphazard best.  I was in for a treat.

Hey, I was introduced to a happy guy at MTA NYCT the other day who’s last name is Fernandes! Well apparently you might know his son somehow? So we got into some talking and I mentioned that I’d be leaving on vacation to the Philippines to do some fishing. Well according to him I’m not the only lunatic fisherman out on the water.
I’ve been to Belize Alaska all over the East Coast Florida of course Cabo San Lucas Ontario Canada for the Great Lakes and thousands of streams and ponds all across New York. Anyways it would be awesome to maybe chat sometime on the phone and talk with a like-minded fisherman. Let me know if you’re interested sometime. I just bought a single person canoe in place of a kayak and I’m in the process of hooking that bad boy up with some gear.
    Let me know,
    ~~B
