How to not find burbot on Simcoe

March 22, 2014
Super lazy day today, didn't get onto the ice until 12:30ish and I had a long sled ride ahead of me.  With temperatures increasing it seems like prime time to find spawning burbot. The target was a shoal I've had my eyes on but never had the chance to fish before the season closure for lake trout and whitefish. Drilled a bunch of holes in a line over the shoal from 60 fow all the way up to 20 fow and back down to 40 fow on the other side. Not a single burbot in sight. However, I did somehow manage to catch five of the largest, most gorgeous whitefish I have ever seen. They were all naturals with all their fins intact. Crazy. The day wasn't a total loss, at least I have a new spot to go to next season! None of the fish left the water, all were unhooked in the hole.
